Pound Shop Flix:

Greetings Dear Reader,

My name’s Tom. I started this blog to give me an excuse to flex my creative muscles. I like films a lot. I also like making fun of things. This blog will combine those two things.

I’ve been looking for something to write about for a while. As luck would have it, I was wandering through one of the pound store chains the other day, I noticed a sizeable space given over to DVDs. Pound stores have always stocked DVDs- traditionally the sort of cheap, unmarketed pap that seems to appear out of thin air and which no-one would be willing to spend real money on. I remembered too the joke present I bought for a friend years ago- a DVD of a film I think was called ‘9 1/2 Ninjas’. This undoubted cinematic triumph was a perect example and was bought from just such a store. Thinking about this brought a smile to my face- what a unique joy it was to behold such nonsense. I decided then to embark upon this project for my own entertainment and satisfaction. If someone reads it- all the better! Hopefully, unlike most other things I have set out to achieve in life, it will last more than a week.

So here’s the deal: Every week/ 2 weeks depending on my schedule I’m going to buy (and watch) a film from a pound store type shop. I will then write about and ‘critique’ them (read: make stupid jokes about them). It won’t just be any film however. I’ve noticed, alarmingly, that pound stores seem to have started stocking GOOD films in amongst the drek. I am not interested in those. Ergo, my criteria is this- the film I will buy will be:

-Obviously mediocre or plain bad (judged by the cover/ blurb) OR

-Something I’ve never heard of before OR

-Both of the above

I will begin this Sunday (09/06/2019) with a film I bought today: Hard Rain starring Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater. Is it okay? Is it bad? Is it terrible? I look forward to finding out!

-Tom
